The Film

Based on a true story, Elva: Art of Redemption follows a young Mennonite woman whose pursuit of a deeper relationship with God leads to excommunication and devastating family turmoil. Refusing to choose silence over conviction, she transforms rejection and heartbreak into purpose, using her God-given artistic gifts to build a powerful ministry of faith, healing, and hope beyond the only community she has ever known.

About Elva

Elva Hurst is a professional artist, published author and musician born and raised in Lancaster County.
Elva grew up in a conservative Mennonite family on a farm where she attended a small one-room Amish and Mennonite school. Though art was often viewed as unnecessary, Hurst began sketching scenes between chores on the family dairy farm. In eighth grade, a teacher recognized her artistic talent and encouraged her to pursue her gift. However, 8th grade was the highest level of education Elva’s parents and the school would allow. So, after finishing the 8th grade, she began to help out on her parents’ dairy farm. In her free time, she began to teach herself how to paint. Determined to develop her craft, Hurst taught herself to paint, saving money for art books and studying other artists at work. Today, she owns Barnyard Art Studio & Gallery in Lititz, Pa., where visitors can find her popular children’s book series, The Farm Life Series, and experience her chalk talk performances. She also travels the world to share her art and the good news that so radically changed her life, and fills her art with purpose, excitement, and adventure!
